In a solar PV design, drawing the roof involves creating a visual representation or schematic of the roof where the solar panels will be installed. This is a fundamental step in assessing the available space, orientation, and potential obstructions for optimal solar energy production. Below is an explanation of how to draw the roof in Enact:

  1. Draw roof outline:

    • Select Free Form from the Roof section on the toolbar
  2. Trace the roof outline:

    • Outline the roof by clicking along its edges (please see below steps for Tilted & Flat roof designs)
  3. Titled roof outline:

    • Click on the edges of each section of the roof separately

  4. Flat roof outline:

    • Click on the edges of the roof and complete the polygon

  5. Properties:

    • Click on View Advanced Options to expand the properties of the roof
    • If Nearmaps is available, the system automatically identifies the dimensions for the length, width & height of the roof. This helps in determining the available space for solar panels.
    • Pitch of the roof is also auto calculated but you have an option to "Flatten" for changing Azimuth
    • Setbacks can be adjusted under the Advanced options

  6. Mark Potential Obstacles:

    • Identify and mark any potential obstacles such as tall trees that might cast shadows on the roof. This information is vital for shading analysis.
    • If the roof has features such as dormers, chimneys, or vents, accurately represent them in your drawing. These features can impact the layout of solar panels.
    • Move to Obstacles or Trees section for next steps.
